Beneficiaries of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

Sheriff Joe was known all over Arizona for the immigrants’ arrests he made. During one evening he arrested the co-founders of the Phoenix New Times and the Village Voice Media, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey.

They were wrongfully arrested from their homes, on 18th October 2007, and a demand, of releasing the names of the citizens who laid their eyes on the stories on New Times, was set by the grand jury. The members of the public sent out a cry towards the release of Michael and Jim and they were heard and the two were released before 24 hours were over.

This arrest was further pursued by Michael and Jim through a lawsuit. The case went on for years but eventually, they got a settlement of 3.75 million dollars.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey set this money aside and started an initiative to fight for migrants, human and civil rights in the community. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund also advocates for participation in civil matters and the freedom of speech.

They assist other companies, individuals, and organizations that have the same goal in mind. The Frontera Fund has helped numerous organizations in the fight for these rights.

The Colibri Centre for Human rights was the first beneficiary of the Fund. This organization works towards advocating for Human rights and it is based in Tuscon. They mainly focus on ending deaths of migrants and halting the suffering of the migrants on the border of the US from Mexico.

The Arizona Ministry which is a faith-based organization is also a beneficiary of the Frontera Fund. The Ministry focusses on providing shelter, food, water and medical care to migrants who are at the south camp in Arizona.

This Organization is very vocal on reporting any form of abuse that the migrants face to the authorities. The Arizona Ministry also plays a big role in the recovery of any property that is damaged or lost during the migrant’s arrest. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter and Jim Larkin | Crunchbase

The DACA program has also benefited from the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This program advocates against the deportation of migrants who have earned the right to stay in the United States. The program offers a two-year renewable contract where it gives the migrants an opportunity to study and work as they access some of the state’s benefits.

Other Organizations such as the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, the Justice for Immigrants and Families Project and the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona have benefited from the Fund in the fight towards getting reforms and stopping civil and human oppression. T

he Fund has gone a step further in ensuring that there is awareness that is created in institutions and schools through a forum, Borderline Issue Chair. The Forum ensures that there is sharing of information relating to migrants, civil and human rights.

Lacey and Larkin make sure that the material for sharing this information is accessible to everyone in these places. The Fund also advocates against any form of profiling, whether race, gender and hiring policies, for the immigrants in a bid to ensure balance and empowerment of these migrants.
