Immigration Rights Inspired by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin

Technology has made the world a fascinating place to be. This is because everything is reachable online. Everyone can access everything from wherever they are. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Michael Lacey | Twitter

It is this exposure that has led to individuals moving from one place to another. Research shows that more than 200 million individuals are living as immigrants.

This migration rate has improved the standard of abuse of human, immigrant and civil rights. Immigrants in many states are discriminated and denied their rights. Most immigrants are denied the right to participate in the decision making of a country. In some states, they do not even enjoy the most basic human rights.

Being an immigrant with this kind of situation can be very depressing. This is because you feel less and so not have the power to talk and be heard. It is however not as depressing with the presence of humanitarians in the society.

The philanthropists feel your pain and not rest until your voice is hard. There have been uncountable philanthropic groups since time immemorial. Every team with one common goal of achieving justice and equality. Some of the groups that have been active in the field are discussed below.

Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

The Frontera Fund was formed by the famous journalists, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. These two are recognized by their bravery to face the law and fight for what rightfully belongs to them.

On this particular day, they placed the story of the evil deeds that a sheriff had committed in their first page of the New Times. The residents could not believe when they saw the publication.

The Sherriff was a respected and feared man of the society. Just as the residents expected, the Sheriff was not amused by the act. He, therefore, arrested them from their homes at midnight. He then drove them to an unfamiliar location.

Luckily, the occupants demonstrated and demanded their release. The Sheriff had no choice but to honor the wish of the people.

Lacey and Larkin then proceeded to court to seek justice. As usual, they won. They were declared innocent and compensated with $3.75 million.

They used this money to begin the Frontera Fund. They first assisted the immigrants who lived in Arizona.

Frontera Fund has fought any battles in relations to human, civil and immigration rights. It also works to ensure that everyone has the freedom of expression.

The DACA Foundation

There individuals who have been in the states for a long time. Although some of this immigrants might not be legally documented, they are the members of the states.

DACA foundation is created to assist such individuals specifically. This is because they have invested a lot of their time and talent in building the state. Deporting such individuals is not the best way to pay them back.

The DACA Organization ensures that its members get an additional two years in the state. During the two years, the member can complete their mission or acquire the required documents to be members of the United States.

End Citizens United Doubles Down on Defense of Johnson Amendment

The United States government has been under a systemic, financial attack by the elites in the country for almost a decade now. The root of this problem goes straight back to the 2010 Supreme Court decision which saw James Bopp and Citizens United argue for looser campaign restrictions. Bopp argued that corporations were essentially ‘people’ and that their ability to donate was just an extension of their freedom of speech. Of course, now it is clear to see what the ultimate endgame of Citizens United was: to flood politics with money from billionaires and millionaires who have a cause to rally behind. Nowadays, End Citizens United is a grassroots political action committee that has focused on introducing a constitutional amendment in order to undo the damage done by the Citizens United decision. Unfortunately, thanks to the election of Donald Trump this task may have just gotten harder.

Donald Trump rose to power on a populist message that thinly veiled his real goal, introducing more and more money into the political machine. Donald Trump took aim at the Johnson Amendment this past summer in order to get more money from the religious sector to flood into Washington D.C. The Johnson Amendment was introduced as the Johnson Act back in 1954 by Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson. With bipartisan support, the Johnson Amendment helped to keep tax-exempt religious services from entering the political machine. The trade off was simple, if you don’t pay taxes then you need to keep your political messaging out of your halls. Despite having widespread support for decades, Trump decided to take aim at the amendment in order to throw a bone to his far-right religious base.

End Citizens United knows that repealing the Johnson Amendment will lead to a dramatic influx of millionaires into the political arena. Imagine mega-churches that are suddenly allowed to donate their congregational earnings straight into the coffers of far-right politicians. End Citizens United is a grassroots political action committee led by Tiffany Muller. Their goal over the past two years has been to address the prevalence of dark money and elite spenders in Washington D.C. When millionaires and billionaires get to control politicians, the average American will end up losing.

According to a Pew Research poll nearly 66% of Americans are uncomfortable with the idea of letting the church impact the United States government. Still, the other third of respondents are vocal and on board with Trump’s bloviating and posturing surrounding the Johnson Amendment. Now, End Citizens United is engaging in a coordinated effort to bring awareness to the disastrous idea of repealing the Johnson Amendment. Progressives and moderates around the country will need to coalesce around this message in order to make it effective.

The Dreamers’ dream though DACA

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, popularly known as DACA is a federal program that provides temporary protection to undocumented immigrants who came to America as children. DACA was launched back in the year 2012 when Barack Obama was the president.

The program aimed at helping those who illegally immigrated to the US to live, study, and work temporarily in the United States. Those who wished to join DACA must pass through vetting.

In the vetting process, they assess one’s criminal history and other acts that might pose as security threats to the state. They must have also completed school or out of military services.

Once an applicant passes the vetting process, their deportation procedures are deferred for two years, and given a chance to renew as well as access to basic utilities such as driving license, working permits, and can join any college in the United States.

Deferred action means that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will classify the individual as a low priority when it comes to immigration enforcement, and will not deport him or her.

Though this may come as a relief to the immigrant, deferred action may be revoked at any time and cannot be seen as immunity or even amnesty.

Those who are protected by DACA program are popularly known as the DREAMERS. By the time Trump administration came into power, there were 787,580 Dreamers approved to benefit from the program. To apply, the immigrants must have been;

  • Less than 31 years on 2012, the same year DACA program was started
  • Undocumented as mentioned earlier
  • Came to the United States before they were 16 years old

As per the program official reports, most Dreamers are from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico. Also, many of them are living in New York City, Florida, Texas and California.

The idea behind the DREAMer program was that most of them had been raised in the US. Plus, they wanted to divert the immigration enforcement attention from what seem to be ‘insignificant’ individuals who had commendable behavior.

Even though the DACA program seems to give hope young immigrants in the United States, the Trump’s administration poses a significant threat. During his campaigns, Trump mentioned that he would render the DACA program illegal, meaning all its beneficiaries will be facing deportation.

Many view Trump’s stand as a divisive and inappropriate by the way he treats the immigrants. Many human and immigrants’ rights organization including Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund, which was formed by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, came forward to condemn Trump’s stand. However, Trump mentioned that the Dreamers would not be considered as low priority by immigration enforcement if they are involved in any criminal activity that poses security threat to the state. For instance, being a member of a gang, or has been involved in criminal activity.

For what looked like a sigh of relief, though for some time, the Trump’s rescinding of DACA program was postponed for six months to give the Congress time to pass similar legislation.
