Modern Democracy Issues with Sujit Choudhry

Sujit Choudhry is a scholar with recognition on the national stage for his work in constitutional law construction. He has been involved with and helped settle many of the modern day global issues. Sujit Choudhry recently published a new written piece titled “Constitutional Democracies in Crisis?”, where he discusses a current issue in the United States with the current president and how that reflects democracy as a whole. The article begins by citing a recent tweet from former attorney general Eric Holder. He believes that President Trump firing Robert Muller would be a complete abuse of his power. Sujit Choudhry finds that this situation represents a red line in democracy. This is where people believe a breach of power would be exceeded, but it can only be enforced by the people. While these red lines exist in all democracies, they are only as good as the citizens of the country.

In the next section, Sujit Choudhry describes how this reflects democracy on a bigger scale. He mentions how the presidential term limit also follows this red line rule. This is nothing stopping someone from running for more than 2 terms, but doing so would be a democratic failure. These forces from within tearing down the government are how nations are changed in the modern era. The time of invasions and forceful removals are an ideologically of the past, as posted on sujitchoudhry.com.

In the modern era, politics in an entirely different field than it was just decades ago. The world is kept in balance by numerous democracies. However, as the ebb and flow continues, individuals are rising up to threaten their very foundations. Sujit Choudhry describes this process as democratic backsliding. It has been showing up across the world in recent years, but most vocal in the United Stets under President Trump.
